Money
At the start of the game you always start with some amount of money, courtesy of the Portuguese embassy, in order to start the journey.
While the most common use for money is to buy resources such as food, luxuries and other resources, the player also needs to pay the salaries of the crew, pay for the repairs of the boat, etc....
As a part of the tutorial, the player will know the importance of money management, how to earn money in different places and learn what is needed to trade.
Each port on the coast and island has an UI showing the resources that are in excess and scarce, the player then can take that and sell the products that are scarce at a higher price, while buying the excessive resources at a discount.
Resources
Apart from some events in the game that require the player to have some money, most of the money that the player has should be spent in other resources since food is always needed and all resources, if bought at a discount, the player can always make profit while selling it.
In this way we can think of most resources as a non-conventional form of economy since it can always be traded back into money and spent on other things as needed.
Conclusion:
The economy system is intricate and ever-changing, so the player should spend the most amount of money buying resources at low prices and selling at the most amount of money, maintaining always some money to recruit new crew members and other events.
