Welcome to another devlog for Assembly RTS, the physics-based real-time strategy game.

Hey everyone! 👋 It’s time to dive back into the world of Assembly RTS and trust me, there’s a ton to unpack.

Technical Updates

First off, big high five to all of us 🙌 – I’ve tackled most of those big, scary technical challenges for Assembly RTS. Confidence levels? Skyrocketing. 🚀 There’s still some techy hurdles down the line (like sneaky vehicle pathfinding and some agent behavior tweaks), but nothing's gonna catch me too much off guard. Well, maybe the map editor… there’s ALWAYS something with that guy. 😅

Preparing for Steam

But let’s switch gears a bit! Why haven’t you seen Assembly RTS on Steam yet? Great question. I wanted to focus on the tech until I was 110% confident in my vision before I concentrate on getting it up on Steam.

Remember how Steam wants those in-game snapshots? I initially thought, “Eh, let’s just jazz up some visuals, and we'll deal with the logic later.” But then, 💡! Why not put in cool features like team colors, weapon VFX, and weapon targeting for REAL? This way, not only can I boast with awesome pics, but I might even treat y'all to a sneak-peek video of the gameplay. More eye candy = more wishlists, amirite? 😉

This Week's Achievements

Alright, rapid-fire update on what’s been done this week:

  • Each player gets their own home base. Home sweet home! 🏠
  • Home bases and vehicles now wear the player's colors. Looking sharp! 👌
  • Got those home bases constructing with some snazzy VFX 💥
  • Made vehicles hover nicely above the terrain 🚁

Task Management and Tools

On the task-tracking front, I've been juggling a bit. I've always leaned on Codecks for the big milestones—it's fantastic for those overarching tasks. But lately, for the nitty-gritty, day-to-day stuff, Obsidian has been my go-to. It's just simpler to keep a quick checklist there.

However, big news: I stumbled upon Mem.ai this week. After feeding it all my Obsidian notes, it's been a game changer. Now, whenever I'm scratching my head thinking, "How did I implement that thing again?", Mem.ai's got my back with the answers. Talk about a lifesaver! 🙌

For example, I wasn't sure if one of my system groups is responsible for presentational ECS systems:

Art and Improving Skills

Prepping for that Steam page, I've got some pieces in the works. They're good, but aiming for greatness here. I need to create more art for the Steam page including different kinds of thumbnails.

I've got my eye on this Udemy course that might just be a game-changer. 🌟 I'm leaning towards using Photoshop, Blender, and snagging some slick Unity screenshots for my promo stuff. While Affinity Photo was my old sidekick, it's time to level up those editing skills. After all, when it comes to image editing, Photoshop's the reigning champ. 👑🖌️

Speaking of leveling up skills, you'd probably think this episode's got a sponsor like Skillshare, right? Nope! 😜 But on the real, I did stumble upon this killer book on game dev math. Got my hands on the demo and, guys, it's shining bright with promise! 🌟 Diving deeper into that math magic can only mean bigger, better things for Assembly RTS. Exciting times ahead! 🚀📚

The Roundup

The next few features on my checklist:

  • Angle vehicles to match the terrain surface. This has been bit of a tough cookie 😅
  • Make buildings selectable by the owning player only. Because why not!
  • Show ground markings when a building is selected. Visual cues for the win! 🔍
  • Display the build radius when selecting a building. Pretty circles everywhere!

Next, I'll be focusing on enhancing gameplay functionality for vehicles, adding VFX, and developing additional weapon assets. Plus, I'm planning to incorporate sound effects for the video!

So, the plan? Publishing the Steam page with a sizzlin' video preview in the next 2-3 weeks. Hold onto your hats! Thank you for sticking around with this devlog! For all things Assembly RTS, just smack that follow button right here on IndieDB.🐁
