For this one, we'll be talking more about the main concepts we'll be delving into for our first prototype. Main mechanics are reserved for the next DevLog.

Hello once more!

It is time to talk a bit more about the narrative themes we've been teasing here and there.

What we will be telling through My Rosemary is very influenced by the time frame we'll be working with. The Estado Novo were heavily censored times. That fact made Portugal feel numbingly safe and isolated, while the perpetrators of such state concealed both the good and the bad, leaving only what they would allow. This feeling of isolation, vagueness, rurality and ignorance is the main focus for our game.

This can be done in many ways. For our case, we want to show this both through the game's story as well as through the environment. With the game still being in development (and to not spoil the game's story) we'll be talking mostly about the environment.

To convey the sense of lonesome and blissful ignorance, our main environments (for the current state of the game) are two houses: Rosemary's Family Home and the Abandoned House.

Both of these reflect this feeling in its two aspects.

  • Her home is cozy, quaint and calm, being in the outskirts of Óbidos. There is little to do there, and that further exemplifies this state of stagnation and numbness.
  • The abandoned house is more traditionally isolated, being dusty and appearing slightly worn down. This invokes feeling such as stillness, loneliness.

Simultaneosly, as our game progresses, this feelings will vary, with some of this being exposed in the abandoned house.

While it still is how it was described above, the player will explore this in the daytime. Pairing the sunrays peering through the windows with the answers found in there, it resembles a "glimmer of hope", subtly being implied to the player.
