You can always set the minimum size for the screen on Android (I think for 4.0 and above).

Nice post. I agree with you that local multiplayer is much more engaging and fun, especially with some good friends.

It's also true about the design limitations of a mobile device. I'm curious how you get around this with Splattr Ball. I honestly can't see playing local on a mobile device unless it's a tablet.

Have you thought about using bluetooth? That way, you can keep the local multiplayer feel, as the players have to keep in close proximity, as per the limitations of bluetooth, and keep separate screens to the players.
