The past few months of dedicated effort have led to many improvements and changes to Eidolon Awakened. From a complete story and cutscene rework to adding new systems and overhauling existing mechanics.

Greetings!

It's been a while since I've made a dev log about this project. I've been really busy these past few months working on Eidolon Awakened so I haven't been able to write as often as I'd like. The game has received some major overhauls in that time period so I'll use this opportunity to show off some of the most prominent changes.

Story Overhaul and Social System

That's right, the entire main story of the game was reworked with the help of a new team member, a writer. This process took about three months in total but the results have been worth it. The world of Eidolon Awakened is slowly coming to life with an expanded cast of characters to meet on your journey and a lot more cutscenes and events happening as the story unfolds.


Since the game has received an expanded cast of characters I've also implemented a system that rewards the player for interacting with and befriending key characters. These characters are either part of the main story or have their own side stories that run parallel to the main story and each one of them is associated with a certain elemental affinity and a zodiac sign.


Raising your rapport with a character is a major event which can grant the player a plethora of rewards ranging from buffs for your Eidolons to receiving unique Eidolons and abilities, thus it felt appropriate to add a special animation.


Heat System

The previous iteration of this mechanic was very passive and noninteractive and I was not satisfied with it. The benefits Heat provided to the player were passive multipliers in combat which didn't really make it that exciting.

Thus I decided to rework the Heat mechanic completely. It no longer provides passive benefits, nor does it decay naturally. Heat is now accumulated from successfully exploiting an enemy's weakness or landing a critical hit. Once the Heat gauge reaches 100% you can command your Eidolon to use a powerful Heat ability.


These abilities are very powerful and they are usually determined by the Eidolon's species. There are exceptions to this rule however as certain Eidolon are given their own unique Heat ability.

New Portraits

Finally, dialogue portraits have been prepared for every major story character and other important characters and NPCs. Here's an example of some of those portraits.

In the future the goal is to expand the amount of characters that have a dialogue portrait and also include different facial expressions.
