You need WebQuake or GLQuake to run in on x64 Windows. But the installer doesn't work on x64 Windows, so you would have to use DOSBox to install this or search for a preinstalled version.
Have you tried to launch the mod from Steam instead of Desura?
Desura likely launches Source SDK Base 2007 with -game key instead of calling Steam to launch the mod.
If this doesn't help, try to set SDK Base 2006 launch parameters to `-game "PATH_TO_STEAM\SteamApps\SourceMods\Gstring"` (without `backticks`) and launch SDK Base from Steam.
IF FIREBALLS CRASH THE GAME:
1) Install Source SDK Base 2006
2) Re-extract GameInfo.txt from the mod archive you downloaded.
DO NOT MODIFY GAMEINFO.TXT!!!
Source 2006 mods are INCOMPATIBLE with Source 2007!

The mod works fine for me out of box without any errors. The Steam overlay shows that I'm playing Source SDK Base 2006. I think those who have issues with fireballs modified GameInfo.txt to make the game run on the 2007 base.
This mod is one of the best mods I've ever seen! The only things I don't like in the mod are the lack of crosshair, overused post-processing effects and unbreakable glass on the first map. Glad to know that the former two will be fixed in the next version.

By the way, the images are awesome, but I think the door on the Living Quarters Outbound platform should be opaque to increase the feeling of being stuck on the platform.

I like the ported improvements to the levels, but placing Dreamcast logo everywhere and changing the key hints in the Hazard Course is stupid. Feels more like an emulator than a mod.
