Fantastic. Well worth the multi-year wait and the $15 I spent when it was on sale.
Beautifully rendered and a lot of fun.
After how much fun Black Mesa Source was, and having followed this project for a while I felt confident in pre-purchasing this game a few weeks before release. Right off the bat I felt like the Intro was a bit muddled and visually annoying. The dialogue was poorly written, and the voice acting barely adequate. I'm not expecting triple A quality here, but when you're gonna charge for something, I expect a reasonable level of quality.
After finally gaining control of my character, the intial running around in the boring corridors wasn't too fun. Most levels loaded with a "NODE DATA OUT OF DATE. REBUILDING". Again, something I'd be okay with from a free mod, but for a paid game, it feels like that shouldn't be happening.
Once I finally got a weapon I was like "okay, time to kick some ***.". I was a bit weirded out in my first fights with combine soldiers. It felt like it took 3 or 4 times as many shots to bring them down. I'd unload a bunch of rounds into their heads and they wouldn't even flinch. I was playing at the lowest difficulty.
After playing a half hour, I became convinced I was playing a Beta and ended the game with the intent of returning once it was fixed. I come here and see that its not a Beta. So I've put in a request for a Refund - something I've never done before. I had to look up how to do it.
I've followed this project for a while, and it pains me to say that I do not recommend buying this. The screenshots look beautiful and maybe eventually it gets decent, but when the first few levels feel like a trip to the dentist, I'm not willing to stick around.
I would be open to reconsidering buying/playing it in the future if significant improvements are made.
I've been following this game since it came out but only within the last month have I started playing. Out of fear mostly. My fears were justified when I found myself spending many hours a day hacking away at blocks and scurrying for cover when nightfalls or falling into lava.
This reminds me of playing with Legos when I was younger. I can build just about anything I want and I've had a fun time exploring the world created. A great game.
