Freedom Fall

Game review may contain spoilers

TL;DR: Story of Portal meets the art of Bastion meets the gameplay of Prince of Persia. Two massive thumbs up.

This game is a wonderful experience. Its developers set modest goals based on their capabilities and met every one of them. The result is a highly entertaining game that doesn't outstay its welcome.

The first thing that struck me about this game was the art style. Reminiscent of Bastion and its ilk, the mish-mash of medieval and steampunk made for an eye-catching aesthetic which, due to its stylisation will avoid looking dated as tech improves.

Gameplay-wise there is not much to say except that it's fun, controls tightly, and is very well put together. It has a very Prince of Persia-esque feel without seeming derivative.

The music is very pleasant to listen to and fit well with the action taking place and the aesthetic the art style evokes. Not much else to say except that I'd buy the soundtrack if it was made available.

The place where this game really shines, however, is the story. Games with a malicious narrator such as Portal are in vogue at the moment but the choice to make the villain a little girl was a great hook, letting the story unfold through childish graffiti served not only to keep me amused and interested but also served a double purpose to really flesh out the immaturity of the Princess. I really felt that this was a believably immature child, which made the evil she was capable of more effecting by contrast.

The story was paced extremely well, unfolding at a rate that impressed upon me the amount of skill and polish that the team went to.

All in all Freedom Fall was just ambitious enough to be impressive but highly polished and hit every target it aimed for. Short, but not outstaying its welcome. 10/10 from me for knowing its limits, sticking to them, and creating a thoroughly enjoyable experience as a result.
