Massive update

GrumpyMunkyIndy Blog

Been away from the Indiedb forums for a while, figured while there was no game to upload here I'd wait til there was and boy do I have some updating to do here! Almost every screen shot is out of date, theres a public alpha available with its own installer and almost everything about this entry for the game is out of date! I better get busy!

Ok so not good....

Just a quick update after the girlfriend has been on holiday for a week, So basically I moved the build over to a Win 7 laptop I have, well a busted old samsung with no screen that I got for 50 pounds on craigslist (Yeah so theres an indication of how bad my current set up is if moving to THAT machine is a step up.)

Well it would have been a step up had the graphics card not decided to give up the ghost after a solid week of moving files, wating, testing, installing, modifying, I essentially painstakingly rebuilt the game from the ground up and was in the process of testing one of the newly modified levels when the graphics card gave up the ghost.

So back I go to the Win Xp machine, a machine I might add that I found in a dumpster...

Its a miracle I got as far with this game as I did on those two pieces of crap but its all I have, all I can afford. And when A free pc that someone left in a dumpster is all you can afford you know times are bad

So long and short of it is game is on hold for the forseeable.

I have no Idea when I'll be able to afford a new machine, if ever, I get paid minimum wage and can barely afford to eat most of the time, making this game was the only thing that was really keeping me positive and moving forward, espescially seeing the slow trickle of interest as people began to follow my twitter and youtube.

I was hoping to at least get as far as having a playable demo that I could maybe kickstart, or patreon off the back of in the hopes of maybe getting enough together to get some equipment capable of finishing the game but that looks like it may never come to pass.

I'll post an update in a few days with any news.

Ok So Social Media Storm is a GO!

First blog post, well..ever for the most part! But Have to make this look professional and I feel the need to explain why this game even exists for the most part.

I saw a lot of videos on youtube, things like the now infamous Air Control, being torn apart for charging money for what amounted to a broken, half finished game.

Now Im not saying I can do better... But having seen the bar set so low I thought I might as well try.

But what to make? I stumbled around for a while creating a knock off flight attendant simulator to essentially be ''Air Control Done Right'' and made a few playable concepts but then I saw a review of Gone Home and dabbled with story telling mechanics, all the while attempting to learn as I went.

Some things worked, some things didnt and gradually I began to learn through trial and error, the basic tenants of game design.

So in the end I couldnt decided on a game to make, I wanted to make every kind of game, and then I thought about the rise of Steam, GoG, the library of streamable games, OnLive and thought... What if all these games, moving online, merged?

Their assets floating through the ether...So one day some innocent player could be happily building away in minecraft only to turn and see Metal Gear Rex lumbering into view, another player in a tense boss fight in Devil May Cry struck down by an errant grenade thats drifted through the veil from a Call of Duty session.

What better a fit for a game, and the player playing the game would naturally be the only one to transition between all these worlds without ill effect as each game they play functions as a way of connecting them directly to that particular world, while npcs, items and enemies, not a part of the players real world, are subject to the whim of this collapsing nexus, unable to stay linked in one world and instead floating freely and uncontrolled throughout them all.

Really its a passion project, a homage to games I loved growing up, Rogue Like First Person Rpg Elements like Might and Magic, Ultima Underworld etc Turn based combat inspired directly by the likes of Pokemon and Final Fantasy, a Cel Shaded style reminiscent of the DBZ games and Borderlands, XIII etc essentially I just wanted to take all the elements I loved from all these games from my childhood, mechanics, weapons, enemies and jam them all into one satirical package.

Obviously I cant just rip things straight off but I do try to pay direct homage where appropriate while still attempting to keep it original, not straight up plaigarising but more a humorous head nod, the Breaker Sword for example modelled to look very similar to my favourite FF weapon, the Dust Taker as a homage to the Ash Bringer from WoW.

Time to draw this to a conclusion and say really Im just trying to make the game I want to make, obviously its difficult to do everything by myself, modelling, scripting, texturing, creating a soundscape etc but the total control it allows means that the game that comes out will be the game I wanted to make.

Hopefully this sounds like something that may appeal and If it does I urge you to keep track both here and on twitter @GrumpyMunkyIndy

And above else, as always, remember. Games are Meant to be Fun!
