The Briefcase

Game review may contain spoilers

This game is a lot shorter than you're probably thinking, but they definitely got the ambiance down really well. Play this game alone, at night, in a dark room, with headphones, and you'll probably get scared just from standing in the game. The audio in the game is great. The reason I'm giving this game a middle of the road score of 5 is because nothing happened when I played through it. There weren't really any puzzles apart from "find the only door that isn't locked, get a key, and go to another door, to get a key, etc". Also after reading some comments it seems as if there is a monster, or threat, in the game, but I never got to experience this threat on my playthrough. I simply walked around collecting the items to advance through the next door, got the briefcase, went through a vent, and casually walked out the front door. I never saw any sort of threat or menace which made it seem a bit boring. Again, the ambiance is great, and if this game were re-made or worked on more it definitely seems like it has potential to be a really good short horror experience. That being said, in the current state I would not be able to recommend this game to friends.

Side Note: Pressing "enter" for the use action button to open doors and such is inconvenient and would be better if it was mapped to be the mouse buttons or any of the keys around WASD.

Monokrome

Game review may contain spoilers

This game is a great adventure full of unique puzzles and unique ideas. If you've played and enjoyed Portal, you'll feel right at home with this. One of the better and more original indie games I've played so far.

Just like in Portal, you play as a test subject in a lab when something goes horribly wrong, but instead of portals, you control the power of Monokrome, which are various types of energies that can be applied to blocks and other parts of the environment to help you navigate through the map.

The only thing keeping me from rating this game an 8 or 9 is the fact that it's terribly short. The first time I played through it it took me about a half hour, after that, I can run through the entire game in about 5-10 minutes. I wouldn't be so disappointed with the length had this been an alpha or beta version, however because it is listed as the "full release" I was expecting a lot more game play.

-Unique ideas
-Unique art style
-Too short

Cave Story+

Game review

I've never really been into 2D platformers, so that is going to significantly impact my rating of this game.

This game was highly recommended to me by some friends, and I feel like it didn't live up to the hype that they gave it, which can ruin pretty much any game. It was a cute and some-what unique game, but I found myself getting pretty bored with it pretty quickly.

None-the-less, it seems like it was really well developed and the art style is pretty phenomenal.

Haunted Memories

Game review may contain spoilers

Good atmosphere, good graphics, but this game loses most of its points due to the fact that it's based on the Slender mechanic and it has bugs. I've never been a fan of the Slender type monster that follows you around blah blah blah. It was never very interesting or horrifying from the get go, and it's been so over-used in games as of late that it's starting to become a pet peeve of mine. I usually exit out of games immediately once I realize that they depend on this mechanic.

As far as bugs go, there were times when the loading screen symbol would get stuck on my screen even after it was done loading and I had to restart the game to get it to go away. This seemed to happen randomly and was not associated with any specific loading screen/event.

Some of the animations feel like they take too long for the character to accomplish them. Every time I did something as simple as picking up a flash light or other object it felt like the character was really taking its time. To the developer, I would recommend re-thinking the speed at which some of the animations play out.

The only thing keeping this game at it's rating of 4 is the fact that the level design and graphics were pretty good. The plants and shrubbery in the distance always made it feel like you saw something out of the corner of your eye, which added to the feel of the game significantly.

While I was pretty unimpressed with this game, at least it was free, as I would have been extremely displeased if I had paid for it. I would not recommend this game to people looking for an amazing new horror experience.

Warsow

Game review

By far the most fun online FPS battle arena type game that I've ever played. The only thing I can possibly relate this game to is Quake Arena, but with more focus on movement. It's a game that takes a lot of practice before you can play even moderately well, so expect to die a whole bunch when you first give it a go. There are multiple game types and a variety of weapons that, combined with online play, make the game super enjoyable over and over again for hours on end. Have and would highly recommend this game to anyone looking for an online FPS.

The Very Organized Thief

Game review may contain spoilers

I have to admit, this game was more fun than I would have guessed by looking at the screenshots and reading the description, however I highly doubt I would have tried playing this game if I hadn't seen some let's plays by YouTubers. If I just found this game on my own and had never heard of it before, I probably would have skipped right passed it.

The game features a very simplistic graphic style, which isn't necessarily bad, however it does have a lot of issues where you will accidentally knock something over and the object will be very difficult to walk passed, or you will open a door and it will then block you from walking passed it or closing it.

Fun but VERY simplistic game, and you get all of the "perks" that come along with that. Since it doesn't change up much, apart from some of the items spawning in different locations, it will get pretty boring after a while. I recommend taking breaks in between runs so you don't get completely bummed out about it.

The controls are also a bit weird, I'm the kind of person that likes simplistic controls, such as the use or interact button being "E" like a lot of games, as it's very close to the movement keys. It was weird getting used to using the space key instead to interact with objects, as that key is usually always reserved for jumping in other games. The "Q" key brings up the list of items that you are supposed to steal from the house, but it doesn't work while crouching, instead the character holds it above his/her head, out of view.

Despite the bugs/features listed above, the game is pretty fun if you want a quick game that doesn't take up much space and you don't mind the lack of an in depth plot.

Killing Floor

Game review

Definitely one of the better zombie FPS games I've played. If you like Nazi Zombies, you'll love this game. It's simple, stay alive and kill all of the zombies in the wave, then get to the trader to buy new guns/ammo for the next wave. The graphics are pretty good, not the best I've seen, but they are definitely better than a lot of games. The different types of zombies have unique characteristics and battle techniques that really make you think about which zombie you are fighting before you start shooting. So far, the only zombie games that I would choose to play above this one have been the Left 4 Dead and Dead Island series.

Minecraft

Game review

Amazing game that will surely stand the test of time. I've played since early Alpha 1.1 (or something like that) and I remember playing with a friend for what seemed like a half hour, only to realize that six hours had passed when we looked at the clock. I even still remember the layout of the first base we built. Amazingly in depth crafting system, good combat, good level system, amazing creativity capabilities, and perfect online play are just some of the things that make Minecraft such the popular game that it is today. If you haven't played Minecraft, you should probably crawl out of the rock you live under and play the game that hundreds of thousands of people enjoy every single day.

Surgeon Simulator 2013

Game review may contain spoilers

This game is very fun to play the first few times, but that feeling diminishes as you play more. Sometimes I feel like it is more fun to watch some famous YouTubers play through the game instead of playing through the game myself. It was a cool and funny idea, but the rate at which the game starts to become boring is at a very high incline, and anyone that doesn't have the best patience is just going to get annoyed. For the sake of your keyboard, don't play this game if you get angry easily.

Rage Frenzy

Game review may contain spoilers

In my opinion, this game is essentially a re-skin of Doom. The levels and all of the graphics, guns, etc are different, but the play style feels almost exactly the same. Instead of demons you are fighting zombies. Just like in Doom there is no vertical mouse movement, or jumping options. The game is very simplistic in its visuals. Aside from the game feeling exactly like Doom, I would have rated this a bit higher, but decided to take off some points for the very simple menu. I feel like the visuals on the menu could have been a lot better with just a bit more work.
