Arrogant Pixel Dev Diary #19

People, it has been so long since we last posted. Definitely pre-pandemic where the world went absolutely mad. Thank you for your patience; we have been so quiet but, I'm sure you're all aware, we have had to deal with a bunch of stuff with the company and our personal lives that was affected by CO-VID that we just haven't been posting. Without going into too much detail, things got real weird, a lot of us changed up our living situations, loads of us changed jobs...yeah the amount of disruption that the pandemic caused us was unreal but this hasn't stopped us from making cool things and we have now come out the other side with a bunch of awesome announcements.

What have we been up to?

After we launched The Tale of Doris and the Dragon - Episode 2, we had a little bit of time to reflect on what kind of direction to go in and we dove into the best part of development; coming up with cool ideas for new games. We made a bunch of different prototypes and picked up a project that had been on pause for a little while. It felt really good to be working on a variety of other stuff since we'd been working on Doris games since 2016.

We did take Doris 1&2 on the road again for the first time since 2019 and it was lovely to see everyone playing and enjoying it. We put so much love and hard work into making the games, it was just really cool to hear so many positive comments about it.

Not only that, we had a chance to show off not one, but two of our games in development. We have a physical card game, Traders of the Silk Road (which doesn't have an IndieDB page yet - watch this space) and our newest digital game project, Terratorial.

We made a short summary film about our experience at Rapture Gaming Festival 2021. Check it out:

It was an amazing event, especially since there were so many restrictions and we can't wait to come back next year. Check out one of two, Arrogant Pixel stands at Rapture Gaming Festival:

The Historic Dockyard in Chatham was a really interesting area to hold a gaming event as Dovetail Games (the main sponsors of the event) offices were right around the corner and the venue was absolutely huge. It was basically an aircraft hangar and we were displaying games next to a real-life submarine and nuclear warheads - it was pretty wild. With everyone being so careful with wearing masks, social distancing and cleaning down their booths, it felt really safe. And we really appreciated the choice in venue as well since it was indoor / outdoor which allowed for adequate airflow.

Highlights of the event included the official Robot Wars booth, the amazing historical backdrop, and meeting up with people we'd only ever met online! Jay bumped into the other admin on the Women in Games Discord that she runs and had an emotional moment.

The best part about attending events in real-life compared to just digital ones is that you actually get to connect with people. Not to bash online friendships at all, but it's just so different when humans are in the same room together. Just the fact that we saw real players enjoying both Traders and Terratorial...the feeling is a bit hard to describe.

E5XcUkQWQAEDHzm

But Rapture Gaming festival is not the only event that we have attended with these games! Since the pandemic started, we joined UKIE as full members and it's been opening doors for us everywhere to participate in panels and events such as Pocket Gamer Connects, Barclays Demo Day, UK Game of the Show...etc. We'll go into more detail in the official Terratorial announcement post - but it's just been absolutely insane.

We are Bigger & Better than ever

Since the last time we posted, we've also gained another team member that we have not introduced to you yet! Her name is Kerry (formerly of Oak Moon Games) and we met her at the Rapture Gaming Festival event, Cardiff in 2018. Also, can you spot the Doris poster in the background?

kerry
Photo was featured in this Ledbury Reporter Article

She is an incredibly talented 3D artist and Technical art person that joined us in 2020 and you can check out her artwork here on her Artstation.

The team used to meet up at least once a week, in person, to work together but since the pandemic, we transitioned pretty seamlessly to working online. To us, it had a lot of benefits. Instead of using laptops, we were able to invest in our rigs and permanent set-ups. Kerry lived so far away anyway, she had no choice but to work remotely.

We are just so incredibly thankful to the team and to everyone involved in making Arrogant Pixel games. We have the dream team!

E5epmPdXMAMswts
Unfortunately, Saf and Ali couldn't join us at the event and consequently, are not in the photo but we missed them both terribly 😢

Thank you to everyone that has supported us so far

We’re back with some updates regarding the development progress of The Tale of Doris and the Dragon - Episode 2. I am happy to say that we are very close to getting our press builds together and will go into more detail in this post. For all of you following us on Instagram and Twitter, we are forever grateful for your support and patience. We promise that you won’t need to wait too much longer!

What have we been up to?

It's that time of year again and we are busy preparing for the festival season. Last weekend, we kicked off the summer with another amazing weekend at Norwich Gaming Festival 2019. We got so much positive feedback about Doris after implementing changes based on last year's expo. We seriously recommend going if you are into your indie games - it's one of the bigger festivals for indies in the UK.

We made a short summary film about our experience at #NGF19. Check it out:

Last year we got some really useful feedback which we have acted on in time for the festival. We now have a screen which explains the controls of the game properly to the player as we found that newer players were getting a bit confused when opening up the game for the first time. In this screen, you can also see the updated verb coin.

There is a new “Interact” hand icon which replaces the cog that was in Ep. 1 BETA and official release. We felt that it was too similar to the setting icon and we are so much happier with the new design. We are planning on updating Episode 1 with the same changes later on:

3099759B 21F5 42E1 A6F8 D04CD40D

In other big news, we have finished recording all of the voice-over lines for the entire game! We’re currently processing and re-naming all of the files right now but this part of the project has been an absolute beast.
As you can see in the summary in the screenshot below, we have recorded and edited over 1800 voice lines for the game.

Over the course of the entire game, Ryan had single handedly recorded and edited the performances of 4 actors that voiced 14 different characters in this game. At the time of writing, we are nearly 6% away from completing this insane amount of work and I’m sure that Ryan is looking forward to getting this off his desk!

Updated Scenes and Animations

We’ve had a long time to tinker with the scenes that we came up with originally in 2017. Saf has been beautifying them and we can’t wait for all of you to experience it in full when the game is finally launched! For now though, have a look at this scene side by side with the current one in the game. Definitely looking a bit busier and more interesting, don’t you think?:

IMG 1419

If you keep up with our Twitter and Instagram, we have already revealed new Norb and Doris sprites. There are many more amazing characters that we can’t wait to show you.

Not only that, but since we are fully in polish mode at the moment, it has given Saf some time to work on some of the high-res images that we use for t-shirts and flyers. Here is some more amazing work in progress:

It feels odd to be updating this profile after about a year or so of neglect but it's about time, I think. The team have been busy working on the game (don't worry - we're not dead) and for those of you following us on Instagram and Twitter, you will know that it's been an absolute beast of a project. Taken us a lot longer than we originally thought.

Check out these beautiful banners that Saf designed for the gaming festival:

Norwich2

What have we been up to?

Production has NOT ground to a halt. Let me make that abundantly clear; the team have been working incredibly hard and we just have high standards. Throughout March to May 2018, we polished and finalised a section of Episode 2 to show for the first time at Norwich Gaming Festival. Deadlines like this always tend to focus the team and we spent the few months before the event grinding this out.

Can you spot our booth at the Norwich Gaming Festival? Here's a lovely snap from the event:

Norwich3

We have been on the festival circuit in the later part of 2018 as well. We made it to Cardiif University and University of Northumbria in Newcastle run by the lovely folks at Rapture Gaming Festival. We had loads of fun meeting everyone that attended the event and hanging out with all of the game developers at the after party at the end of the night.

Most importantly, it was a chance to get feedback on the game that we had been working on so far. It was really nerve wracking having people sit down and play Doris 2 for the first time. It was so useful to see how people interacted with the world and we took this opportunity to write down any last minute changes we wanted to iron out before we release.

Where is the game?

As you all know by now, The Tale of Doris and the Dragon - Episode 2 is a much much bigger game than Episode 1. I think even without a walkthrough, the original game could be completed in under an hour if you didn't get stuck on the notorious rib puzzle. Episode 2 really is a completely different animal. In recent play tests, we are looking at a 3-4 hour experience but we have not done a complete run through with people that didn't know how to solve all of the puzzles.

It is a success in itself knowing that we can play the game from start to finish. Right now, we are still in production but are very close to moving onto polish and bug-testing phase. However, we have voice acting bits left to do (though we are also very nearly finished with this) and some other last minute bits. It's really encouraging that we are almost fully in post-production. It's very satisfying to see how much work has been completed.

We are also looking at the possibility of pushing a big update for Episode 1 before we launch Episode 2 so newcomers to The Tale of Doris and the Dragon can have a more cohesive experience. The original BETA in all it's buggy / untested glory will always remain on Newgrounds.

When is The Tale of Doris and the Dragon Episode 2 coming out?

We mentioned in the last blog post that we wouldn't reveal a launch date until the press builds are ready to send out. Right now, the team's priority is to get the game as perfect as it can possibly be. It is so difficult working on a project as big as this - motivating an entire team to keep slogging away has been really challenging but I hope I speak for everyone when I say that I am proud of what we are producing. I am really happy with how this game is turning out.

I am determined that we launch The Tale of Doris and the Dragon Episode 2 this year.

If you are a journalist / reviewer / youtuber and would like to request a press copy, please get in contact: jay@arrogantpixel.com

Thank you once again for your patience and we sincerely hope this game will meet and exceed all of your expectations!

Arrogant Pixel Dev Diary #8

We've been incredibly busy working on the game and the trailer is now released! We are so pleased that Episode 2 is fully in development and we are making good progress, week on week

Here is a snap from our recent work sessions:

Here is a list of the major changes that we see in the trailer we posted a few days ago:

  • Better art style and animation

Having Saf (DarkLitria), fully on board for the art for Doris and the Dragon Episode 2 has been incredible. In Episode 1, it was pretty much all of Ben's artwork. The most amazing thing is the speed that we are now currently working at with her help. Animation and art can be the slowest and most frustrating part of putting a game together. Especially if you are doing it all yourself and can't put all of your energy into making the art look perfect.

  • New scenes

In the trailer you can see a bunch of new scenes. You can see a small snippet of the management complex and the departure area. It is certainly a lot busier and livelier than the barren landscape of Limbo from the first game. There are also some new areas revealed in some of the screenshots. We'll leave you to speculate for now!

  • More sound design

This was a contrast that we really wanted to highlight with the sound design in Episode 2. We have spent hours and hours recording foley and sound effects. This simply wasn't needed in Episode 1 as the landscape was so sparse. In the departure area alone, you can hear the tannoy in the background as well a busy wallah track with people milling about everywhere.

  • New Music

As always, we focus on the music and sound design to bring the 2D world of Doris and the Dragon to life. This game is no exception with a brand new sound track by AssadB. Since much of the game takes place inside this enormous building, the soundscape is completely different. We have a few classical music inspired pieces, much like the first game. The trailer track was taken directly from the game and will feature in one of the main scenes.

  • New characters and Voice acting

Doris is greeted by check-in staff and a security guard in the opening of the trailer. We also meet the Whale Baron and his prized cow (whale), Bessie. That's all I'm going to say for this blog post - all will be revealed very soon!

That's it for now, folks. Please make sure you vote for Episode 2!

We'll be back with another post soon!

Going to be honest, I didnt care what this game was - I was buying it just for the word "dragon". But I'm really happy I spent that £2.50.

Good art, great voices, a little short but we all know size doesn't matter all that much (PLUS it has a dragon). I love the humour and I'm curious as to where the story is going. I found this game while looking through the steam market results for "dragon background", I stumbled upon Norb and I HAD to buy the game. And I'm glad I did.

Can't wait for Episode 2.

EPISODE 2 UPDATES: STEAM DIRECT AND GREENLIGHT

Doris and the Dragon is a love story. Our brave heroine is on a journey to find her missing husband Albert in the vast wilderness that is Limbo / Purgatory / The Divide / The Underworld - whatever you want to call it really.

We are pleased to announce that we are on sale again to celebrate Valentine's Day! I'm sure Doris misses Albert very much so make sure you support the project this week!

Today, Saf has been spending her time with us creating the stunning promo image that is available at the top of the page. Here is a sketch of the work in progress.

15623644 582733838585530 6120951

This week, Valve announced the new Steam Direct feature that will now replace Greenlight which is exciting news for the development community. There are a few articles that have been posted over the last few days that go into the potential strengths and weaknesses of such a system but we have faith that whatever happens, it will benefit the Steam marketplace as a whole.

It does throw a bit of a spanner into the works of how we were planning to release the full Doris game but the plan is to still aim to upload Doris and the Dragon Episode 2 to Greenlight as soon as possible. We hope that we can have your support to push this through the voting procedure as quickly as we did last time!

This week we've been busy putting some new music into the game! In the last post, we revealed a small clip of some of the new soundtrack. This footage is from one of our recent development sessions and some more soundtrack teasers!

We are back in the studio again to do more voice tests for the outstanding characters. As of right now, we have ten new characters and about ten new explorable areas with more to come. Most of them are confirmed with the voice actors that we have available but we are still in the process of casting the last few that have proved to be a little difficult. Don't worry we are on top of it!

One of the comments we received on Steam asked what sort of improvements we might be making to the voice acting for Doris Episode 2. For a start, the voice of Doris is staying the same for Episodes 2 and 3 for consistency and we are constantly working on how we select the right takes. Ideally, we would be setting aside at least a few weeks to make sure that the vocals are really tidy in time for the release!

See the photo below for a snap from our latest recording session:

16230418 1206331919422780 578131

We learned a lot from releasing Episode 1 and we really appreciate all the feedback that we received. We are confident that this will make Episode 2 even bigger and better.

Also, here is some wicked fan art that we received on twitter! A fan from Japan has gone to the trouble of creating an anime version of Norb the Dragon! How cool is that????

An unexpected treat, a joyously little thing, and with such great voice acting. It reminded me of what I loved about Pratchett, and it caught me off guard by sharing a more fleshed out view on Grant Morrison's concept of the purpose of a Universe. All in all, lovely. Fun characters, great voice acting, and just an overall sense of fun. Really, really good job. I couldn't praise you enough, despite how short it is. Loved it right down to the stylised visuals that reminded me of Another World. Please make more.

We are back from a short winter break and ready to leap into action to make a real push for the trailer. It's taken a little longer than expected to get the assets together. We really want to make sure that the trailer was the best representation of the game possible, so we are taking our time to ensure that it's going to be perfect.

This is a quick snap of the Arrogant Pixel development team as we say goodbye for Christmas and the New year break before coming back to work in January!

Saf has been spending her time animating the scenes and the new characters (which we are SO excited to show you by the way). It looks like an almost complete game! Ben is busy putting everything into the game. We still have voice acting to complete but since Ryan is now back in the country, we are jumping on that too this week.

This is a quick photo from today's work jam session :D

We are working as hard as we possibly can on this game. It is truly a labor of love.

We'll be back soon with another update!

A wonderful game, which truly impressed me as I was not expecting much. The characters are funny (I absolutely adore Norb) and the voice acting is on point, althougt it is quite short my time was definitely not wasted and I look forward to seeing more of the episodes come out - Bobik via Steam

EPISODE 2 UPDATES: SOME MAJOR MILESTONES

Happy Holidays to the IndieDB community. We are pleased to announce that we are on Sale again. You can grab up to 33% off in the Steam Sale! This is for a Limited time only so make sure you grab a bargain while you can!

In the last update, we talked about how we had completed the script for the game. Production has been going really well and it is nice to see the game coming alive, slowly but steadily.

The real test was putting all the assets that we've been generating over the past few weeks and months of development. Saf has been working hard on background art and character animations, Assad and Ryan have been busy recording and composing music and designing the sound. Ben had planned out the main dialogue trees and written a huge script and game document that we are all currently working from.

Saf has been one of the busiest members of the team with all of these background pieces to finalise and pass on to Ben. All of these needed to be finished in order for the game play programming to begin. Luckily, she is a beast so she finished this weeks ago and is now finalising character art and animation!

At this stage, we had become a lot more comfortable with the lore and the overall story that we want to tell. A few weeks ago, most of the asset programming for key scenes were completed and you can see the joy on Ben and Assad's faces below:

It was also really good to have Jamie Wood back in the studio and laying down some dialogue that will end up going in the game. Getting started with some post-production work is also really exciting and the light at the end of the tunnel is now kind of visible.

Here's a quick snap from our first official game voice audio recording session:

The goal for the next few weeks (after we have a short break for the holidays), is putting together a gameplay trailer for the imminent Greenlight campaign. We are ready to go with the voice acting recording so I imagine this won't be too far in the future.

Anyway...back to the grind! We'll be back with another update, shortly!

We hope you enjoy the Winter break!
