It's sort of a cheat so I don't have to hand animate, hah. There are 3 planes: left side, right side (left side flipped and at 180° on Y), and the back. The boat object itself is comprised of those sprites and a few other things like triggers and such for collision. When you try to move the opposite direction of your facing instead of applying movement, I rotate the ship on the Y by that much. You can stop the rotation anytime just by letting go of a key, change direction, etc.
