Located in Doca de Alcântara, Lisbon, Museu do Oriente is a cultural institution dedicated to showcasing the arts and cultures of Asia, with a particular focus on the relationship between Portugal and the East. Housed in a former industrial building, the museum offers a comprehensive exploration of Asian civilizations, spanning from India to Japan.

Entrance of Museu do Oriente

Today we had the opportunity to visit this wonderful museum and be immersed on the Asian culture.

Upon entering the first floor, we were immediately surrounded in the aura of Ancient Asia. From meticulously crafted samurai armor to delicate ukiyo-e prints, each exhibit whispered tales of honor, warfare, and tradition.

Samurai Armours

One particular highlight of our visit was the museum's Japanese area, a serene space dedicated to the land of the rising sun. Here, lays a treasure trove of samurai armors, delicate ceramics, hypnotic woodblock prints, Darumas and hundreds of relics that echoes Japan's past. We found ourselves transported to the captivating world of feudal Japan. Each item on display tells a story of the country's journey through time, allowing us to appreciate how Japan has evolved over the centuries. From ancient traditions to modern innovations.

The traditional festivals of religious nature are also on the spotlight of this exhibition. We can see these celebrations have an important role in Japanese society as pillars for the construction of identity and community, of their conception of the world and the forces that move it. The thousands of pieces on display, help out to guide us throught the universe of these celebrations. Setting out from the principles of Shinto and Buddhism in Japan, this amazing exhibition invites us to discover the pantheon of deities and their attributes. Next, we tour the main annual festivities, alongside purification, protection and funerary rites, fertility cults and end of year ceremonies. We even got to try our luck with an omikuji! Let's just say, some of us left with fortunes bigger than others... Here's hoping mine wasn't just a 'good luck next time'!

The museum features several sections dedicated to the Portuguese presence in Asia. This collection consists of more than 2800 items, such as, furniture, textiles, porcelain, all you can imagine, ranging from 3000 B.C, to the mid 20th century. There were devotional objects present that demonstrate the importance of the Portuguese in the spread of Christianity in Asia. These artifacts serve as tangible evidence of the missionary efforts and cultural influence exerted by the Portuguese in introducing and establishing the Christian faith across the Asian continent.

As we said our goodbyes to Fundação Oriente, our heads were teeming with ideas and our hearts were full from the rich cultural experiences we had just encountered. Our team was inspired!
