History

I started out making small little prototypes in Blender 3d with their built-in game engine, mostly based on YouTube tutorials. I was really just learning how to move objects and the basic concepts of programming. This culminated in a small game that I released and sold at a Christmas sale in college. You move a 3d ball around an obstacle course filled with rotating and static barriers, across static and moving platforms. Fall off the edge and you lose. Hit the goal at the end of each level to move to the next one. It had about 10 levels total. I left the sale for a few minutes and came back to find that everyone was gathered around the screen trying to see if they could beat it. The graphics were just basic 3d primitive objects, but that experience was still fun and challenging. That stuck with me.

I was introduced to Unity about a year later when I had to create a game for a course. I grew up playing Crash Bandicoot, and have always been a fan of platformers, so I set out to create a one-level demo platformer of my own. You play a scientist that is hurled through time and stuck in a Mayan-inspired world. You have to dodge fireballs and rotating guillotines, while jumping from platform to platform. Dodging obstacles seems to be a common theme in my games. The demo ends with a boss battle against a floating Easter Island head statue that shoots fireballs from its eyes. You defeat it by throwing beakers at it.

Elevader started off as a small prototype that I created a few years ago. I wanted to create a system with simple game mechanics, simple controls, and limited movement that anyone could play. It was based entirely off a 3x3 grid. Weapons would fire from each column and row, except for the bottom row where the player stood. This system quickly grew more complex from there with varieties of weapons and variations of each type. I still needed a progression system. Since it was in one room with limited movement, placing it on an elevator made since. And I could use each floor to track the player's progress. The working title was Elevator Assassin. I shortened it to one word: Elevader, a combination of Elevator and Invader.
