A group of about us 4 people are making a rpg game. We're looking at top-view 4 party system gameplay(Dragon age-ish. Skill trees etc need to be finalised) with Bastion level graphics. The game's concept is good, I'd dare say and at least 3 of us are quite motivated to see it through.

What engine should we take? GameMaker seems not enough, and everyone keeps dropping unity. Construct 2 and stencyl came across too. But the thing is we don't know which will be best suited for the type of game we'll be building. I'll be doing storyline, coordination and coding(know some OOP languages well), my friend will handle 3D animation, 3 D modelling & some programming(he's good too), another guy will handle art and wants to dabble in coding. 1 other guy seems like he wants to do music and if I climb atop some building in my college a dozen programmers will gather(yeah). I wanted to ask what all is needed? Any advice on how to go about this? Do we need more artists and 3D modellers? Should we use blender(can't afford sky high prices of stuff like Maya)?

Any help will come in handy :D

Probably naively enough, but I had in mind a very decent looking rpg game(say... bastion level graphics). A team of 4-6 would work on it.

It's single player co-op game with focus on teamwork. We'll have 8ish playable characters. Game's mechanics should be similar to dungeon siege or DA, but we might end up in a slightly different direction. The game will span across two worlds - one magical(and medieval) and the other futuristic(expect robots with lasers :P) across a rift space(Also playable). It's an open world rpg. What engine should we work on? unity, stencyl and constructor seem like options as GameMaker seems too basic. How's building an engine? Guess we'll do pacman level games on different engines first, maybe?

There will be voice acting, although not a lot of it as it will be very hard for me to get narrators without accent

Rpgmaker is pretty good, but its got retro-style graphics.

im no sure what engine would be best for you, maybe you could try making you own?

My tip is to get started and have something in hand for showing to people. After that if they like what they see/hear they will join you or give you their thoughts on the game. So my advise is to start with something.

You could also try unreal engine as well.

Best advice is to keep the game super super small. Everyone underestimates how long it takes to make a game, so make the scope tiny and they you can finish it and get feedback quickly. You can always expand from there.
