Combining mechanics from city builders such as SimCity and from roguelites such as The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, Apex Revenge is a fun, comedic, highly replayable city builder designed for accustomed planners and newbie players alike. Welcome to Apex Revenge!

Apex Revenge is a roguelite city builder game in which your goal is to rebuild your hometown. The game works on a 16x9 grid of 80x80 tiles.

The game is really early in development, so getting feedback on what is essentially a prototype is one of the top priorities as of now. The reason I chose IndieDB instead of another platform such as Itch.io or Gamejolt is because I wanted a better platform for writing and posting devlogs. I felt the Itch tools were pretty half-assed to be honest, and that devlogs aren't really shown to the user much, even though they give some good insight on what the developer is doing. Proper builds will come in the following days, and so you know a bit of what to expect, I've made a quick rundown of what is present in the game and what is planned.

Present features

The game has two main game modes; freebuilder and strategy. Freebuilder is a sandbox where you can experiment with tiles and build whatever you want to build. The strategy mode is the soon-to-be most important mode, requiring you to build with a certain amount of money as well as with power-ups and debuffs. As of now, only two things are present in the strategy mode which are the money tick, which gives you the sum of the prices of every tile, divided by 50, and the lawsuit which happens every two minutes and removes you 5000$. I am currently working on nerfing the lawsuit which can make you lose in the first two minutes of gameplay, just because you placed some things.

Planned features

Power-ups and debuffs are also to implement. They are planned as a preliminary system for the first IndieDB release. Internally, they will have a similar system to tiles, so that they too are highly moddable. I also plan to add an irremovable block to the game that adds an extra challenge to the game. The block is going to be a town hall of some sorts. I also need to buff the game because it's extremely easy to never die in the game, just by accumulating so much money that you can fill the whole map with godzillas(yes they exist in the game). One thing that has been requested from people to whom I've shown the game to was changing the textures and, while yes they are absolutely awful and I'm working on remaking them, I do not think that I will make one big update that'll change everything.

About visuals

One thing to note from textures is that for some of them(specifically sand, grass, road, and buildings) it's not their first iteration. Here's the same classic freebuilder map(called New-Saint-Jérôme) with the old and the current textures:

New-Saint-Jérôme with old textures

New-Saint-Jérôme with old textures

New-Saint-Jérôme with new textures

New-Saint-Jérôme with new textures

That being said, you *can* swap out the new textures for the old which are still contained in base/oldtiles.

Porting?

I have seen some people worry about being able to play the game on Mac and Linux, myself included(since my school enforces 2020 13" Macbook Airs). I do plan on releasing builds for Mac and Linux eventually but it isn't at the top of my priorities as of now.

Conclusion and farewells

I will try publishing regular devlogs on IndieDB as well as on Youtube. I plan perhaps one per week on IndieDB and one per month on Youtube. The first build should come out in early April. With all that said, see you next time! o7
