Weekly dev update on Ale Abbey - our upcoming Monastery Brewery tycoon!

Posted by on

This week's Something's Brewing has a little bit of everything; lots of progress on things you already knew about and something quite new.

Keep reading to get updated on new animations we are preparing for the Meditation Room, aesthetic details created for the Recipe Writing UI, and commencing work on Ale Abbey's Pilgrims!

-- Working on the Pilgrims

First off, we worked on the characters that are tied to a gameplay mechanic we haven't talked about in-depth yet, the Pilgrims. Pilgrims will be visiting your Monastery from time to time and it will be up to you to help them or turn them away... Chances are you will opt for the former because they will be the ones handing you quests tied to a number of randomly selected rewards:

  • A free tech unlock
  • A Florin reward
  • An Ale recipe
  • Bonus to Fame
  • An increase in the Local Lord’s Benevolence
  • A Blessing Token (more on the Tokens later)
  • Remove a random flaw from a Monk/Nun

The quests given by the Pilgrims won't necessarily be influenced by historical events (although that is yet to be decided), and they will be the best way for you to make some serious leaps in in-game progress with all those rewards successfully completing their quests will get you.

Consider them extremely fresh and subject to many changes to come, but here are the WIP potential models we're considering right now :)

-- Animations for the Meditation Room

With work on the Meditation Room commencing a little while ago and quickly approaching the polishing stage, we also started working on the room-specific animations; namely, the animations of Monks and Nuns meditating/praying as a way to "find their center", refocus, and start brewing anew!

Expect more animations to probably make their way to you sometime in the next few weeks ;)

-- Details for the Recipe Writing UI

Finally, a small addition to the Recipe Writing UI used in-game. A very essential part of the game where you are expected to spend quite some quality time on can't really shy away from the passing of said time. So here you have our contribution to realism... so far!

-- Benefits of consuming your favorite brew

Have you ever wondered? Or maybe looked for a good excuse to try a new brew? If we put aside beer's incredible contribution to social and cultural enjoyment - which is immediately obvious and kind of shared with other alcoholic beverages - what other benefits can one get from consuming a good brew?

  • Antioxidant properties: Beer contains antioxidants, such as phenols and flavonoids, which can help protect the body against free radicals that contribute to cell damage. These antioxidants are mainly found in the malt and hops used during the brewing process.
  • Nutritional value: Beer, especially traditional craft beers, can provide essential nutrients. It contains B vitamins (such as niacin, riboflavin, and folate), minerals (such as potassium, magnesium, and phosphorus), and dietary silicon, which may contribute to bone health. Now you know why fasting Monks quickly shifted to beer brewing!
  • Cardiovascular health: Moderate beer consumption has been associated with a reduced risk of heart disease. Some studies suggest that the alcohol and certain compounds in beer, such as polyphenols, may have a positive impact on cardiovascular health by improving lipid profiles, reducing inflammation, and promoting blood vessel health.
  • Kidney stone prevention: Research has shown that sensible beer consumption could potentially reduce the risk of kidney stone formation. The high water content of beer and its diuretic effect can definitely increase urine volume and could play a major role in decreasing the concentration of stone-forming substances.
  • Stress reduction: moderate beer consumption can have a relaxing effect and help reduce stress and anxiety. Please remember that beer is not the solution to anxiety and should in no way be considered a healthy long-term coping mechanism.

Please bear in mind that beer - just like any other alcoholic beverage - should be consumed in moderation. Do not drink and drive and always drink a lot of water in-between rounds. Nothing is better than enjoying a good brew and taking care of one's self!
