Hi there,
Like many people the PS1 era was the best for me as a gamer, even though I was young.
The Final Fantasy series holds a special place in my heart and helped guide me onto my journey to want to make games. But one game stands above all. Final Fantasy 9.
For many reason this is the most fun, beautiful and emotional game in the entire series and only playing it again as an adult I can appreciate it as a game dev as well as a massive fan boy.
Originally I just wanted to play another game like FF9 but sadly there isn't anything out there like it, that I could find. So I just thought I'll make my own.
So, the project I am proposing is to create a similar game in the style of FF9. This is super early and I'm looking for a programmer and writer to help me flesh out the story, world and mechanics. I am a student 3D artist but know enough to start on this project.
I am trying to just create a small basic team to create the groundwork and base of this game purely as a passion project. If it turns out to be more then I will kickstart and discuss money but until then this is not a profit project.
So what I have in my mind is something like FF9 but tweaked and improved mechanics, as much as I love the turn based fighting I think it's a little to slow and boring now. But sadly the modern FF games also are not what is desired. A blend of the new and old is what I want. Nostalgic art, themes and mechanics with a modern twist of fun and engagement. I know I'm asking a lot so I really am looking for people who are fans of the genre who want to make something special with me.
Things planned to put in;
Open world and contained areas
Turn based combat with a twist to make it feel more alive
JRPG / RPG style characters and stats. Sadly no anime, I want that strange and wonderful world of FF9 art, characters and creatures to come through.
Ability system
Weapon and Armor system
Monsters
Just general FF and JRPG/ RPG things but only if they make sense and add to the story
A rough story that includes areas, characters, arcs, love, loss, etc. Just a good story.
To help with time, I only plan to make this into a series or chapters. To reduce workload and not create a mammoth of a project.
I'm happy for low and high skill people to come on but I've worked plenty of projects where people (including myself) have bitten off too much and given up or ghosted. I'm looking for people with a professional attitude but you don't have to know everything. As long as your willing to learn or fill gaps in desired knowledge.
As for specs of the game stuff -
I personally work with Maya, Substance, Photoshop, Zbrush, Unreal Engine 4 (from an artists point of view).
I understand a lot of programmers prefer Unity and I'm open to it but will need a lot of guidance with Unity.
Writers, I don't own Word (shocking I know) but I have the rip off versions. I'm also a bullet point kind of guy so when you come on, big long paragraphs with great detail are not gonna work. Brief to the point and often backed up with images would be appreciated. I'm looking for your imagination and ability to create a story.
