We are trying to decide which camera angle to use in game. Currently we are thinking of going with TPS view, with the camera behind the character. But recently we had other ideas as well.
Top down view
Much like Hotline Miami, the camera will be just above the character and have a top down look. You will mainly see the head but wont be able to see the clothes or face expression properly. But enough to be able to see the background and your own character. With this angle, you are also able to see the enemies around you etc.
Quarter View
The camera angle is set to about 45 - 50 degree view. During development this was the first angle we tested. With this angle you are able to see your enemies and play with ease. But you are not able to see your own character properly. This camera view is not very popular in our studio. We would love to hear what you have to say about this.
Over Shoulder View
This is standard angle of shooter, I think.Playing at this angle, the auto aiming system(this game mechanics) isn't needed. Manual aiming is better.Later on, I will write an article about aiming mechanics.
GOCCO OF WAR is still in deveoplment. So we would like to hear everyone's opinion and ideas!
Thanks.
We'll try other angles. Feel free to comment.
Personally I feel a much better connection with the npc's and more immersion in my avatar in an over-the-shoulder view. Top down is the most impersonal imho, quarter view isn't bad, on a scale where 1=over the shoulder and 5=top down, Quarter view would be a 2 or 1.75. Hope that helps! Good luck with whatever you go with. :D
Thanks! Yeah I understand what you are saying. I think an over-the-shoulder view feels much better too. So basically you mean the camera distance should be more closer to the avatar like Gears of War?
By the way, I added the over-the-shoulder images.
The over-the-shoulder pics look awesome! That's exactly what I was talking about, although in my head I was thinking 'Legend of Zelda' since that's one of my favorite games. But yeah, closer is better (I wouldn't get any closer than you already are in the pics, it seems perfect imo).
Yeah! View of 'Legend of Zelda' is one of the best angles I think! One of my favorite games, too!
