Mainasutto: I'm not Alone is a metroidvania about time, set on a dark fantasy world, where decision making is crucial for our protagonists to save their timeline.

History

I've (Andrëw) always loved time travel stuff and metroidvanias, maybe since I was a child playing Castlevania SotN on my PSX on 2003 and wanted to do something with the ideas I had to make a "better" version of it, but the game development really started in 2012 as mod of Cave Story called "Post Story: I'm not Alone" or just "I'm not Alone" (That's why the ambience and a few things or NPCs could be similar to Cave Story as well), but between 2013-2014 I decided to start working on it using GameMaker for a Gamejam and have been working as a hobby a few hours a week for the last years.

First 3 years was the experimenting phase. Didn't know what I wanted the game to be at the end, but worked on a lot of features and received a good amount of feedback. Re-started the game like 5 times and had a hiatus total time of about 1 year, but learned a lot.

Next 3 years (2017-2019) was the world building phase. Here I know what I want to do with the game, but had to define the world and the story of the game. It was hard to do and I re-wrote the entire script a few times adding new stuff. That made the game a features hell and I couldn't stop it, I quitted the development of this game.

During late 2019 and mid 2022 I was on hiatus. I was just burned and couldn't open the project and work. Also, I was finishing the university, started living with my gf and started working fulltime. I had almost no time nor motivation to work.

Late 2022 - early 2023 I resumed work on the game, remade the whole engine and removed a lot of features. I also rewrote a lot of the story, but since I now have a defined scope, the game is going faster than ever, also publishing demos more often so the feedback loop is shorter.

So you can say I've been working on this game for a decade, but I just started really developing since 2022.
