PC gamers have long considered consoles to be "behind the times" since customization of games was either not possible or flatly denied by the parent company via a series of cease and desist lawsuits. We've known for a while this was going to change now that the current generation of consoles have harddrives and other functionality which allow indie developers to "try stuff" out, but it seems things are finally starting to happen. Epic has just announced PS3 modding support on the Sony Blog so lets hope other companies follow their lead, realize the benefits of modding and open up too.
This is great news for modders, especially if their creations can be easily ported onto different platforms and are compatible with one another (i.e. PS3 UT3 gamers can play PC UT3 gamers online), as this presents the mods with a chance to reach an entirely new market of people who either consider PC gaming too complex or too expensive and stick with consoles only.
Just amazing.
Thanks Epic, i can finally mod a game without worrying about the specs of my PC...hopefully i'll be able to buy a PS3 in the future.
OMG! This is uberly cool! Although it was announced way earlier though.
Good news, this will only help and encourage people in mod development,
The console platform offers you the Joysticks which is a really great deal for some specific game play(rpg, race games, fight games etc...).
Well this is great news and all, but it is'nt new. this was announced ages ago. so we the console gamers have known this for a long time... but now that it has reached moddb, perhaps modders will take more notice of this and do something really cool :)
Well, the tools that you were able to do so were only released recently. Not to mention, with the advent of UT3 being released this Tuesday for the PS3 makes this even more important.
Access to mods will also reportedly be granted to the Xbox 360 version of UT3 as well. I'd just like to clarify that for anyone who's wondering.
Announced ages ago that UT3 mods would work on consoles, but I believe sony / microsofts support was uncertain. Just good to see them making progress and formal announcements on sony's site and encouraging modders to get involved.
Well though I have not heard about this until now, this just makes modding a bit more interesting. Just to see what the community comes up with will be such an interesting experience.
Even if someone manages to develop one mod, I don't think console gamers are intelligent enough to know what mods are in the first place. A mod to a console to a console user is inserting a chip into their xbox.
It's not a flame im just stating the fact that 95% of console gamers don't know what a mod is. I have yet to find a single console gamer that doesn't activley play PC games that know what a mod is.
Consoles should stick to what their good at, racing and fighting games and nothing more. The optimization to make a mod work on a ps3 is going to be rediculous anyway since its a garbage machine with little ram, atleast the last time I heard. And i'm guessing there gonna have to switch hard drives out every time they want to install a new mod. Ps3 hard drives are 3 gb? maybe 10?
Sure, modding will seem like a totally new concept to some console gamers, but I don't see why that should be held against them or why their system should bar them from a potentially amazing gaming experience. I'm sure Epic will find a way to bridge the gap so I'll reserve my comments until I find out more about how this concept will work.
I definitely like the idea though and I think it will give many talented and creative people more opportunities to get noticed. I've seen quite a few mods start to lose momentum shortly after release due to a lack of attention.
Incorrect, the PS3 is more then capable of this and there are 40gb and 80gb versions out there, so there's more then enough room.
You'll find a lot of PC gamers, 95% of them, don't know what a mod is. Funny how that works, huh?
Ignorance must be bliss. You obviously know nothing about the PS3 and what it's capable of doing. =P
you are right but these mods will be able to be put on the playstation network and people will obviously see it then
why dont yo just put that money towards your pc, and having a much better gaming system?
This is excellent news, more reason for me to get the PS3 version, once I get a PS3 first though :p .
Isn't this making history in a way? UT3 on ps3 is the first console game to have the option of receiving mods.
history? Mods are old news they've been around for so long but as I stated before there a new concept to console gamers so they either Don't really care or don't really know what a mod is.
According to the comments on the Sony blog, the idea seems to be very well received among PS3 owners. A lot of them are very enthusiastic about the prospects (although some are confused as to why the toolkit is only included on the PC version and I'm too lazy to go through all the technical details).
well, hopefully console gamers will learn their place in competative gaming when we get to play them cross-platform.
There is no cross compatibility, I don't know where you got that idea from.
I'm certain I read they were working on allowing PC gamers to play console gamers in an early post. Same netcode should not be massively difficult right? It may have been another game though i'm not certain
It's not really because of the net-code, it's because of the control system; the Ps3 version will use auto-aim assistance, just like all other console FPS games. The control systems are also very different, the gamepad will suffer from immensely different reaction times to keyboard and mouse users.
It is probably possible to use the Ps3 version with a keyboard and mouse with the PC version (and what I've seen suggests mouse and keyboard is supported), but then it's not really console gaming anymore..
Because the editor is not supported on consoles, and nor is the code compiler.
And I'll state gain to LaDouche, most PC gamers don't know what a mod is, either, so stop with the playa-hating. :P
yeah 95% LaDouche... wondering where he got this made-up information from.
From experience, not sure what PC gamers you know but I have yet to find someone who plays Pc games that doesn't activley play mods of some kind.
People who play flash games don't count as PC gamers!
You must be surrounded by mod players. Everyone I approached at Best Buy when I worked never heard of mods before, and I dealt with several dozen unique people a day (and spread over 2 years, that includes hundreds of people).
It's a niche. The only time anyone perks up is if I mention Counter-Strike, which everyone around the world who is a gamer is aware of, PC gamer or console gamer alike.
And I don't know where your definition really lies. I mean, my mother plays The Sims and enjoys casual games, but she knows what mods are. However, I have another friend who can't get enough World of Warcraft and Unreal Tournament, didn't even know mods existed until I told him about it. I myself spend most of my time playing console games, and I was aware of mods back in the early beta days of Cstrike in the late 90's, although I was barely on the computer at all when I shared it with my 3 brothers and sister, so everyone is different.
I looked into the PC vs Ps3 differences. The two are not compatible as the Ps3 version uses auto-aiming and runs considerably slower to account for the handicap in the control system. Mouse and keyboard thus probably isn't supported.
mouse and keyboard are supported, I know it is. It was announced on Epics own forums.
i really hope this works... wud be interesting to tinker around with :D so can't wait really
I just bought this game, plugged a mouse and keyboard into the ps3 and it worked instantly. Controls were flawless with the keyboard. Also, it was reported on early in development that the game WOULD be cross platform, but because of the difficulties involving patching the two different platforms, that idea was scrapped in favor of a holiday release. They have not ruled out making it cross platform in the future once the bugs are worked out.
I had also read earlier that xbox will not be moddable or cross platform compatible, but theres still time for them to implement those things since the xbox version is yet to even have a release date, they're thinking may as of now.
