Octopede is a fast-paced 2D survival shooter for PC and Xbox 360. Take control of a computer worm inside a hostile mainframe. Your mission - to gather as much data as possible before the host’s defences get the better of you!

In Octopede, you play as a lone computer program in the desperate search for more megabytes. With more ‘data’ eaten, the system becomes increasingly more aware of your presence, sending out enemies and obstacles to try and eradicate you. Equipped with a large array of weaponry ‘the worm’ must blast its way through hordes of deadly virus, bugs and glitches to collect the data rich discs.

Eat green data to increase both your score and your strength. Each time you eat some data, your tail length increases. Tail pieces serve as both health and ammo – both very important in the hostile system.

Protect your head! Your tail is invulnerable to damage and can be used as a shield. Watch out for deadly enemies and imposing firewall systems, one strike and you’ll lose 4 un-cached tail pieces, and when you get hit with no tail pieces, it’s game over. The key to Octopede is building that multiplier, destroying your enemies and keeping a keen eye on what is going on around you.

Only those that can show heroic dedication and true skill can then go on to unlock the core!

DRLEMON REVIEW: "The gameplay is good. I love that bit. However, the gameplay is marred by bad controls. Maybe you could allow us to use the numpad, or allow all 8 directions to be a single stick. Until then, the game is flawed." -

ORBITAL GAMES: Octopede has supported the numpad since the beta. Both keyboard control sets are active at all times so they can be mixed and matched to suit your style. Could you possibly have numpad turned off? If you have disabled the tutorial you can reactive it in the options or alternatively check out the keyboard control layout in the menu.

Originally we had it set to 8 directions on the same stick but as the game progresses you find that you start to loose control. As enemies cannot move diagonally the right stick allows you to quickly overtake, cut them off or otherwise escape certain doom.

We will include options to switch between one and two sticks in our next update
...but don't say I didn't warn you ;)

These are by far the best visuals I have ever seen in a snake game, nice work! I can't seem to get enough of old school arcade games, so I'm looking forward to this one.

Couple of random ideas:

1) (If levels are added down the road) Name the levels according to chunks of the address space, e.g. 0x00000000, 0x00001000, 0x00002000, etc.
2) Display the score in hexadecimal (esp. since scores are incremented in units of 8)
3) "Compression" power-ups that allow you to store more data in less tail space (hopefully that made sense)
4) Enemies could be malware/bloatware that could be destroyed by antivirus software

Many thanks from the art department :)
Some nice ideas form you too. Especially like compression but might over complicate it visually.

We will release Alpha tomorrow evening so you can see how we have dealt with caching. Thanks for tracking!

Hey Deraj,

Thanks for your comments and feedback! I've already implemented some mechanics similar to your ideas, such as displaying the score in bytes and kilobytes and giving the player access to some cool tools to use against the 'system defenders'.

I really like your compression idea too, so I'll keep you posted if we decide to get that in.
