Space Hexplorer combines some of my previously un-released space game concepts such as the physics engine, collapsible fixtures, state based AI (chase, orbit, run, strafe).

The core game hinges around designing a ship out of 10 different hex shaped modules to survive against other enemy ships. The modules are either defensive or offensive in nature. Each module can be destroyed individually. The ship is considered destroyed when the central command block is destroyed.

I am planning on having several arcade like game modes with an upgrade system for the initial mobile release:

  • A "Free Build" mode that allows you to freely build ships and spawn enemies.
  • A "Chameleon Mode" where you and the AI are given a set of blocks and you have to build a ship and battle.
  • "Survival Mode" with waves and build/re-build sections in-between. This mode will also have a leader board. Also a mode that is called
  • "Gladiator Mode" where you are put in a random ship and are pitted in a small arena with teams.Every mode (but "free mode") will gain you credits in which you can spend on leveling up your equipment.

Space Hexplorer - Weapon Module Break Down.

  • Forward Firing-Laser: this is one of only weapons that have auto-aim. This makes it miss a lot. It's damage is increased to compensate for it's accuracy. This is the most common weapon found in SH. Graphic is a short blue or orange line (laser bolt). Fast firing speed medium damage.
  • Missile Launcher: the missile launcher has homing missiles that lock on the nearest target when fired. It has the longest range of any weapon. The graphic is a small triangular missile (in the future will have a trial of some sort). Is is medium firing medium damage weapon.
  • Beam Turret: This weapon is the second most common weapon in SH. It has a range in-between the Las and missile launcher. It will auto-track to the nearest enemy command module. This make it very useful to quickly take out a ship. It also can pierce blocks and take out fragile blocks like shields. The graphic is a 'raycast' line that slowly dissipates. The beam can also miss if the ship is going fast or is very narrow in design. Also the firing speed is the slowest of all weapons and can be very erratic at times.
  • Plasma Shot Gun: This is a very deadly weapon for both its target and its user. The gun shoots 5-7 shot-gun pellets doing very high damage to anything it hits. But the range of this weapon is very short. Which requires the user to get dangerously close to its intended target. The graphic is a small circle that shrinks in size.
  • Mine Layer: This weapon is a rare fine on the battlefield but can be very deadly in the right hands. This weapon lays mines that cause high damage to multiple blocks when hit. This graphic is a small 4 sided star.

Space Hexplorer - Utility Blocks Break Down.

  • Armor Block: This block has no active skill at all. It is a block that has 2.5X the durability as other blocks. This block is mainly used in the front of the ship to absorb damage.
  • Healer Block: This block heals all blocks within a defined radius every few seconds. This block will have lower then normal health (50% to 75%).
  • Shield Block: This block emits a shield that blocks all incoming damage. The shield is a circle that slowly recharges over time. The shields radius will decrease with every hit. The shield block is very fragile (1hp) so it should be buried behind other blocks.
  • Engine Block: Probably the most common block you'll find because every ship has them. The engine block gives turn rate and thrust to the ship. The more blocks you have the more engines you'll need to move that mass. There is a set minimum and maximum speed/turn though. Maneuverability is key to surviving in SH.
  • Command Block: This is the core to every ship. It is important to keep this block safe at all costs. If this block is destroyed the whole ship be lost. In the creator this block is always placed in the middle grid.

This is a list of all the skills found in the video. Times and effect are not finalized. I just added them yesterday so some might be changed dramatically.

  • Absorb Damage (0:31) - This skill heals the players block by a percentage of damage it takes while the skill is active.
  • Shield Bubble (0:57) - Creates a shield bubble that deflects any enemy fire and enemies themselves. This shield lasts until it is depleted. Unlike shield blocks it does not have a recharge.
  • Mine Field (1:19, 1:36, 1:50) - This skill creates mines for every block your ship has. The mines act like normal mines.
  • Warp (2:00 - 2:22) - propels the ship forward X number of meters. Forward is the direction the ship is facing.
  • Freeze (2:37) - stops all action from enemy ship for a time.
