It's been a while since the last update, so I wanted to detail some of the things I've been working on over the last few weeks, and give a progress report on the Greenlight campaign.

Remember, if you'd like to play an early version of the game, the first release is available in HTML5 form at FattyRabbitHole.com!

FRH on Android

Get ready to start doing the robot - I'm working on getting the game onto Android, alongside the Windows/PC version! The base game will be identical, and both come from the same source code, so it's not an overwhleming amount of work to get the game onto other platforms. I'm also exploring the idea of an iOS version, but that will take a little more time (and money) so we'll see. Maybe a future announcement...

Major Updates & Additions

  • New touch controls - Getting the game to be playable on Android required a total overhaul of the (very basic) touch controls in the original version of FRH, and I've been very happy with how the new controls work. I also made them customizable, in that you can lock them in one position or let them move as you play. You can also change the size of the touch controls, so you can be comfortable playing on whatever device you're using. I've been testing the game on an 8" Samsung Galaxy S2, and it plays great!
  • Support for widescreen (16:9) - FRH was originally developed to play fullscreen with no letterboxing on my laptop screen, which has a 3:2 aspect ratio. In order to make the game more enjoyable on other devices, I've added support for screens with a 16:9 aspect ratio as well.

This extra screen space doesn't reveal anything particularly useful, but at least you can play on a standard widescreen monitor without any letterboxing on the sides. The extra space can also be used for touch screen controls. Screens with aspects wider than 16:9 or smaller than 3:2 will still have some letterboxing, but for most screens, it will be minimal.
  • New halftime mini-game - I've added another mini-game to the set of halftime rounds: Bucket Show! This Bucket Show is a little different from the original, and involves actual buckets. You can't get hurt during this mini-game, but you can lose some of your round progress if you aren't quick enough.
  • Updated tutorial/how-to - The old how-to section of the game was created quickly to facilitate a fast release of the HTML5 version of the game.

Since that's now behind us, I wanted to present these screens in a better way, so the old tutorial, which had the rabbit swiping screenshots left and right, is gone. The new tutorial looks like a theater with the rabbit watching an educational film/slide show.
  • Bonus foods are more obvious now - "Bonus" food in FRH is food which gives you lots of extra points, but doesn't let you progress through the level by filing up your belly. Previously, there was no indication when you picked up a piece of bonus food, aside from the fact that the stomach UI didn't react. To make things less confusing, I've added a small bonus point flyout that happens whenever you pick up bonus food. I'll probably use it in other instances too, it's a nice little effect.
  • Intro screens - These are a little less exciting to gamers, but something that needed to be added at some point. The game now calls out Games by Martin Crownover and Matt & Mattingly's Ice Cream Social (the podcast which served as a major inspiration and source of gags for the game), as well as the usual legal stuff.

I've put a lot of work into making these screens look fun so people won't hate them, but you can skip them if you don't like them.
  • Options screens - Finally, the game is now configurable with a new set of options screens. This is where you access the new touch customization feature mentioned above.

Greenlight Campaign

Progress with Greenlight has slowed, but we're still getting a trickle of votes, and the number of people voting up versus down has been growing as well. This was expected of course, and it's giving me more time to make sure I can add features to the game without the pressure of being able to release it.

Still, if you like Fatty Rabbit Hole and want to see the game get on Steam, please help out and share the Greenlight link. Every vote helps!
