The team at Mantis Digital Arts has been focused on attempting to make the game more fun and appealing. As part of this transformation, we have introduced the resource and point accumulation mechanic. As can be seen in the video above, the player now see how many resources the have gathered from each flower on which they land. Based upon how many resources they gather, the are awarded a certain number of points (in the top right corner of the screen). The resources that are gathered will change based upon the objective for each level. In fact, some of the levels will not require the gathering of resources at all. In those cases, points will be awarded differently.
In addition to working the accumulation mechanic, we have also spent some time making the game more visually appealing. The screenshot below shows the dirt we've added to anchor the scene of the first level, the new texture we're using for the hills, and trees that we've added to the background. In the near future, we will be adding more background elements to the hills (e.g., houses, roads, other creatures, etc...).
We're getting very close to finalizing the animation sequences for both the American Bumblebee main character and the first predators - the Crab Spider. The movement for both of these can be seen in the video below.
The attack sequence for the crab spider can also be seen in the video below. This video shows the transition from the idle animation to the preparation to attack to the final attack.
All in all, things are starting to shape up nicely for the completion of the first level. This will allow us to create a playable demo which we will host to show off what the game is all about.
One final thing of note is that I had the opportunity to watch a couple of kids actually play Buzz Whiz: Bees this week. The stood there and played for about 20 minutes on a game that does not yet have much of an objective defined or any rewards implemented just yet. It was very satisfying to watch them enjoy something that we have created.
Thanks for reading.
