The Boden Project is a new take on resource management and strategy games giving you, the player, stewardship of a ring-world, built by humanity as the next step to our survival in the universe. With an ever-increasing population to satisfy, you must gather resources, produce energy, and please your inhabitants against unrelenting threats including overheating, blackouts, solar flares, and planetary eclipses. Can your ring-world stand the test of time?
This the third installment of the exploration of the range of buildings available for you, the steward of a Project, to construct in order to achieve your goal.
In previous articles we covered the variety Food buildings on land & water, and how they are utilised. This article will cover the Power buildings.
Power Buildings can be built on both Land and Water, and provide different upgrade opportunities if they are built on either. This article will cover the former, Land based Power Buildings.
The standard Power Building on Land is the Wind Farm. Wind Farms are the basic Power generators and also form the basis of all upgrades, as a Wind Farm is needed to invest into new branches of Power generation.
The Wind Farm has a tall turbine at its centre. A Wind Farm can be upgraded several times to increase its output, and in doing so adds more turbines and generators.
The more a Wind Farm is upgraded, the more Power it creates. This can produce a lot of heat, meaning if a Wind Farm gets destroyed a large chunk of Power will be lost to its Population Centre. A level 1 Wind Farm generates 3 Power. At its maximum level, 7, a Wind Farm produces 21 Power.
Upon reaching Level 3 with a Wind Farm, Conversions become available.
The first conversion available is a Solar Farm. A marked step up from a Wind Farm, Solar Farms provide a net boost to your Power output. Converting a Wind Farm to a Solar Farm instantly starts at level 3 and provides a +3 boost to Power output, which scales as the Solar Farm upgrades. This conversion does have a drawback however as it heats up faster than a Wind Farm, meaning that it can overheat sooner causing loss of Power.
A maximum level Solar Farm (Level 7) will produce 24 Power.
The second conversion available is a Nuclear Plant. An even bigger step up from a Wind Farm, Nuclear Plants provide a net boost to your Power output. Converting a Wind Farm to a Nuclear Plant instantly starts at level 3 and provides a +6 boost to Power output, which scales as the Nuclear Plant upgrades. This conversion does have a drawback however as it heats up even faster than a Wind Farm, meaning that it can overheat sooner causing loss of Power.
A maximum level Nuclear Plant (Level 7) will produce 27 Power.
That was the range of land Power buildings available to you to build on your Project. The next article will look at how you can build Power buildings on Water.
