In a world of jaded heroes and veteran adventurers, you play a team of misfits: Arianna, a dainty warrior with an attitude problem; Dirk, an adrenaline-junky rogue who doesn’t seem to understand the word ‘subtle;’ Benjamin, a nature-priest and an ill-suited newcomer to the adventuring lifestyle, and Chloe, a ditsy sorceress with a love of cute, fuzzy animals and setting her enemies on fire.

Adventuring is always a dangerous profession, but recently things have gotten bad. Very bad. Teams of expert fortune-hunters are getting "morted," suffering great losses against enemies that are better prepared than ever. In the taverns and Adventurer's Guildhalls, whispered rumors speak of the return of an evil that once all but destroyed civilization. But as many great and famous adventurers fall to this growing threat, perhaps this bunch of losers - called "The Frayed Knights" (but never to their faces) - might just be the heroes the world really needs:

The wrong people at the wrong time.

Features:

  • 30+ hours of gameplay.

  • Challenging, turn-based combat in a game that plays at your pace.
  • A unique "Drama Star" system that rewards the player for playing through tough situations instead of reloading and replaying.
  • A spell named, "Power Word: Defenestrate."
  • Over a hundred base spells, most with several upgraded variants.
  • An innovative trap-disarming / lockpicking system using character skills and items to disable a device one component at a time.
  • Over 80 feats to customize your party as they progress through the game.
  • A detailed, "stats-heavy" rules system... which you are free to ignore if you choose.
  • Nearly 200 different items to be used and abused by your characters.
  • A "Quarterstaff of Nad-Whacking."
  • Sixteen "dungeons" (interior adventuring areas), five outdoor areas, one village, an alternate dimension, and some green dude's one-room hovel.
  • A THICK (virtually) 69-page PDF manual. For those who want more than just the tutorials...

Frayed Knights has received an update! In addition to some balance changes and fixing a couple of subtle equipment cut-and-paste errors, the in-game license key requirement has been removed. Nothing major for old veterans of the game, but it should make for an improved experience for new players.

Played Frayed Knights today for the first time. It was part of some bundle I bought some days/weeks ago (can't even remember where and when exactly). But I really LOVE the humor and dialogues so far. 10/10 points, especially for the "good ol' days"-RPG feeling. Great one!

I bought Frayed Knights today despite having a backlog of games longer than my longest left foot, because your enthusiasm for your project and your obvious pride in your work was contagious enough to push me over the edge into buying. I'm looking forward to putting some time into enjoying your game, and I hope you never lose that passion!

Thanks, SD! I have the same kind of backlog, so I know EXACTLY what you are talking about. It can be tough when you see how many games you haven't only not played much of, but haven't even installed yet (dang bundles!), and try to justify *ONE MORE GAME*.

I appreciate it, and hope that you enjoy it!

The 50% sale continues today - plus a give-away of another game. Answer trivia (which you can actually find out just by playing the demo) to win a chance at another free game:

Anyway, hope ya'll are having fun.

Still waiting for a mythical -75% sale. Between 5$ and 7.50$ is my price point for most games, what can I say, Steam has spoiled me.

Disappointed to see, that you didn't mention anywhere that Frayed Knights is up for voting on Steam Greenlight. More votes wouldn't hurt it

Yeah, I suppose I was being overly generous to Desura.com by not linking to a competitor. :) I keep hearing that Greenlight is going away, but it may be a long time before it does.

I really like how movement through the dungeons seems fluid. Not like the typical matrix motion where you move square by square and are forced to look in 1 of 4 directions.

My main issue (and this was HUGE for me) was the interface of the game. The interface really...really bugged me. It felt like I was playing a browser game with lots of pop-ups getting in the way of my game. The battles did not feel natural and I spent more time navigating the what seemed like paragraphs of information on my screen to cast a spell.

The game looks very well made, and it flowed very nicely. I just couldn't get past the interface, but I suppose this is by design and would appeal to people seriously looking for an old-school game made with experience and ideas that did not exist during the old-school days.

Is there a chance to get this as a standalone version? I have no interest in installing the Desura client and would like to play the game I bought.

Yes, though it would be bad form to post the link here. But I'm sure you can find it. Some folks I refer here because they really prefer having a client manage it for them.

Your statement can easily lead to misunderstandings. So far I haven't found a way to download a standalone version of your game on Desura. I got a CD-Key here, which I thought might activate the demo (which I had to download from your homepage, as it's not as a standalone on Desura either), but no luck with that. And I'm certainly not going to rebuy the game from your website so that I get the standalone I was expecting to get here.

I was confused. I've got the standalone version uploaded to Desura, though I'm not entirely sure how you download it . I didn't realize Desura offered that! My bad. Anyway, let me know if that works or not.

Worked perfectly. Thanks for the quick response and sorry for being a bit impolite.

No problem. Fortunately Desura contacted me about it too (VERY responsive - these are good guys!) and helped me figure out what was needed.

Also a big thank you from my side for uploading the standalone version, it's very appreciated.
