I was wondering what the feelings of the IndieDB community was on text-based MMORPGs. I was thinking about creating one with a few new twists to make it more interested but the base concept still applies of typing commands and having to read. So, would you play a text-based MMORPG? Leave feedback on why/why not after you've voted.

A few years ago (Like 5 or 6) when I entered the Gaming Industry, MMO Text-Based games were very popular and there were people extremely excited and passionate about them. But after this, they begun to die fastly when Next-Gen games made their appearance, they didn't stand a chance in front of what the new games could offer. Now we are in the 4th generation of gaming and for me Text-Based games are completely dead. I don't know if you are having a concept very unique and innovative but in general, my answer would be no.

I honestly thought it will heavily depend on the personal's preferences. While some may find it attractive, these days high-tech visual capability is the one mostly in demand. Well, just my 2 cents

There's a similar concept out in a new game called Cloud Chamber - it's a story-based MMO where you have to interact with other players to work out the game's story and who betrayed who and where we are in space and are there aliens etc etc etc... you know, all the mundane stuff you have to go through every day. Might be interesting to you to check it out?

While I will never proclaim a genre dead, (Point and Clicks case and point), I find it very likely that a game like this would not be successful in today's market.

I personally think it depends on gameplay. Even if high-tech visuals is what the market most demands, the gameplay could ruin everything (let's be honest, how many games with awesome graphics we've played whose gameplay is just not good). That's why I think that if the logic is right and addictive, then it can be worth playing even if it's just text-based.
