Hello everyone,

Me and a friend have been discussing the possibility of putting a game together for a few months now, mostly just for the fun of it but also because we think that it's an experience that will be valuable in our everyday work. We are both freelancing 2d artists and designers, and so we were thinking about creating the world in a way that's most suitable to our skillsets. So what we were thinking is to use some kind of 2.5 D setup, with a fixed camera angle, handpainted backgrounds and textures, but with 3D characters and some kind of 3D path to travel. Examples we have been inspired by are Bastion, Banner Saga and Transistor. We have also been looking at titles such as Bravely Default and the Whispered World 2, but for the first idea we want to try out we believe it would be preferable to keep the camera in a more 3/4 top down perspective.

Anyway, we know how to create the assets as we are used to working in 2d and 3d for what we do day to day, but game engines are so far a bit alien to us. Any suggestions for what we should look at would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for reading, cheers!
