MODDB video quality DESASTER! (Forums : Tech Support : MODDB video quality DESASTER!) Locked

I upload a video in 720p to my group and when I watch it here its quality is down to what feels like 360p. I can't read what is written in it, the quality is abysmal.
Is this a joke?

Link to the video?, its probably the way its encoded.

Moddb.com

Tried another video codec this time mpeg4 instead of x264. Moddb.com
The quality still gets reduced pretty drastically but not as drastic. Well that video was originally in worse quality than the other one.

Too large file for compression?

Nov 7 2014 Anchor

the wmv was 640mb so I converted it to MP4 which was about 400mb then upload.
I am not keen on uploading a 2GB 1080p video for hours just so that moddb reduces the quality to 480p or so making it look slightly less trashy.

I CAN'T EVEN UPLOAD THE WMV

Please correct the following to save your media:

  • The file you uploaded (test.wmv) could not be found, please try again.

mission impossible.

This is due to the fact that in group and member profiles we do not encode HD videos. We only do that in game and mod profiles. We can consider removing this restriction? Uploading a larger file wont help

Atleast raise the bar a little that would do the trick. As long as I can see and read what shows in the video I'd be happy. Like going from 360p to 480p. Or hey how about 720p for members above rank 50 as a reward for such loyal members xD jk?

I guess I'll have to upload to steam then... Youtube would remove the video due to the music and hey **** google so yea.

Is there something I can do for the video here? Maybe its just me but I think mine looks worse than others.

That does not seem to be true though. I'm fighting since a long time with video quality problems on moddb and this affects both an engine profile and a game profile. I've been through a couple of suggesstions with the staff here but up to date nothing helped. Videos just turn out low resolution. For the time being there is nothing you can do except uploading on a video host which gives better quality.

Just when I thought that Steam video upload would be a solution I come along this:

Videos must be uploaded to YouTube before you'll be able to submit them to the Steam Community. The YouTube must be set to Public and Embedding must be enabled.

Well **** me.

Lel. Simple hyperlinking.

Can't you like, try Mediafire or some non Google video hosting websites?

Yes! Look inside your heart! If necessary sacrifice it to the mighty blood god. There got to be a way for a slightly better video quality. Doesn't have to be 720p or 1080p neither does it have to be 60fps. Just raise it to something so that they don't look like a monkey took a dump on them and then smeared it all over it.

We believe in you!!!

I have a new idea. Since I reduce the quality of my videos myself I can get the to as low as about 50MB in size. How about you put a system in place that does not reduce the quality of videos below 100mb? I mean, whats the point of reducing a >100mb video in quality? That size is peanuts. On the other hand the current system doesn't prevent anyone from uploading video files that are 100+GB in size.

ya get what I mean?

The video processor can process videos 60min+ in length but its not really designed for it, that being said we don't support 100gig or even 10 gig worth of video as these are over the size limit we allow.

If a video is already encoded it generally wont be re encoded by us, just re rendered for compatibility.

ya there's a size limit dunno what it was but its pretty high compared to a below 100mb vido. I dunno what MODDB does wiht the videos after upload but its definitely hurting the quality quite dramatically.

Looks to me to be the dimensions the video is recorded in.
854×480 (427:240)
What was the original dimensions of the video?

Was linked here by OrangeNero to contribute to the discussion. I have noticed degraded quality to my videos as well, uploaded to a mod page here:

Moddb.com

All of my videos seem degraded. A few of them are partly due to outside issues... However, the latest three videos should all have HD quality. I recorded them using Fraps at half-resolution (starting from 1920x1080). Therefore, the videos are recorded at 960x540. I render them out from the Adobe Media encoder as h.264, using source media matching. In this case, that would be:

30fps
Progressive field order
Square pixel aspect ratio
NTSC
VBR (1 pass) bitrate encoding

All pretty standard for a video of this type. I hope this information helps!

Would it possible to simply allow mod authors to embed videos from an outside source such as YouTube? It seems that since their servers are dedicated to high-quality video, that approach might be easier. But since I know nothing of how Moddb is set up, I could be talking out my ass too. Just brainstorming.

Your videos seem fine, selecting HD they look sharp and clean, can you screenshot me an example of poor quality please?

You can embed videos from youtube, in addition the fastest way to add videos to the site is have them hosted on youtube already, there should be no issues with youtube uploading at this time.

I decided that I'll be uploading the videos rather to vimeo an then put them into private articles. Server space is precious too. I'd rather out-source it. But thanks for the efforts.

perhaps dailymotion is the better choice xD

Don't worry about server space. We are always doing minor adjustments to video quality, but still reserve better quality for game / mod profiles

I can't figure out how to embed videos from dailymotion in articles thou. Its kinda not responding. Is dailymotion supported?

I can't get it to display neither here. Dailymotion.com (just a testvideo)

The ones from Youtube and Vimeo I can. i click and insert the link in the same place but its just not doing anything when the video is supposed to show up.

I'm having a problem with videos as well. For the life of me I cannot upload a video in a mod's video section.

I want to upload this Youtube.com but everytime it returns a HTTP error trying to upload from URL. It's been a while since I first uploaded a video on moddb so may someone please help me? Am I using the wrong URL or is the video too long or too new format?

Are you uploading via URL or a file from your harddrive?
