Hello everyone :)

LingWen is a role playing game that is designed to teach people a foreign language but also be fun to play :) Currently the game only teaches Chinese, but, God willing, we'd like to perhaps teach other languages at some point.

The game is in early alpha and currently only teaches the basics of Chinese, including pronunciation and characters. At its current stage, it's most suitable for people who have never learned any Chinese or are extreme beginners in Chinese.

If this sounds interesting, please check LingWen out and let us know what you think :)

The current release is free :) We only have a release for Windows at this time, but if people are interested in seeing the game on other platforms, please post and let us know :)

Thank you :)
The LingWen team

The Doors in the north are tricky to understand. I suggest when you exit north you enter south.

Bigger scaled rooms / tilesets would be nice.

I think your game concept is a good one and has long-term potential.

Thanks for the feedback :)

We agree that navigating the doors is kind of tricky. The doors on the north are supposed to connect different floors of the dorm, which is why doors on the north connect to other doors on the north. We'd like to, God willing, change the sprites for the doors so that it's clear that one leads upward and one leads downward, which we're hoping will fix the problem :)

For the bigger rooms and tilesets, do you just mean having larger tiles so that the rooms end up being larger? What is your monitor's resolution? Currently the tiles are natively 32x32, but we currently have it so that things are stretched to twice their normal size on high-resolution monitors. I don't think this is ideal, but hopefully it makes things a bit easier to see for those with high-resolution screens :)

Thanks again for the feedback and for giving the game a go :) How far did you get? Did you know any Chinese beforehand? If not, did you find that learning Chinese made the game interesting enough, or was it too repetitive?

Thanks :)

Ni Hao Neoncube,

If you want to keep the doors in the north for now, simply space them apart and put a feature like a window or painting beside them or even a floor number.

With regards to the tiles, 32px is fine however the low LOD (level of detail) makes a floor tile look like four 16px tiles.

Not a worry yet though, making rooms pretty can be left until later, work on the game elements you are ready for. Feedback is feedback but follow your own star!

Ni hao ^_^

Thanks for the suggestion about putting a window, painting, or floor number by the doors; I think it's a good one :)

That makes sense about the low level of detail, and at least for some of the tiles, I agree that it might be nice to have better quality versions of them :)

Thanks again for the feedback :) If you don't mind me asking again, did you have fun playing the game, or was it too repetitive? How far did you get (or are you still working on it? :) ) Had you studied any Chinese before? We haven't gotten very much feedback on these types of things, so they would be good to know, if you have time to respond :) If not, no worries, though :)

It was a little repetitive, yet I don't think its a problem - repetition is needed when learning a language. I am sure you could group phrases together. e.g.

Character 1 >> Hello & Goodbye; Character 2 >> Hello. My name is.... ; Character 3 >> I am busy. Goodbye; Character 4 >> My name is... Goodbye!

I hope this helps and good luck with your work Neon.

Its a good idea, but don't forget to not only teach the language but also the culture of the people.
