This is probably going to be more than just a concept pretty soon, but basically the story is like this:

A 19 year old boy named John is sitting in a dark room and talking to a man with a gruff voice asking him questions about his crimes. John doesn't remember a lot of what happened, but pressured into saying something, begins to make up a lot of the events. As he is remembering, the player is acting out the events in-game. There are auditory and visual clues given that indicate what actually happened on a particular day, and the player can choose whether or not to lie in situations where he is almost certain what actually happened.

Part of the player's amnesia is due to the fact that he is pursued by ghosts and demons, the existence of which is difficult to place. Whenever he lies about something (for example, "I let her go" instead of "and then I stabbed her twice in the gut and once in the throat"), the demons' grip on his mind becomes stronger. This results in visual and auditory hallucinations in-game, some of which turn out to be physically damaging to the player.

The player will soon begin to realize that he can't stop the memories from flooding into his mind, and if he doesn't balance accepting the truth of what happened and hiding things from himself that could potentially drive him insane, he will fall to prey to the monsters he created within his own mind.

So, for something a little less abstract, the game is played in first person. The goal of each "level" is to find the target and kill him/her, while at the same time avoiding the monsters that are trying to drive him insane. This could occur at night in someone's home or in the middle of the day down a dark alley. The killing is not the important part though. It's what happens in between. The player is given the option to and encouraged to explore his environment. He can learn important things about himself and the victims this way, which gives him new abilities that can allow him to spot his demons more easily, become harder to see, etc.

Ideally, the game would be very story-driven, with focus being placed HIGHLY on it being a frightening experience. Seriously, no messing around here. I think the dynamic for the player between knowing he is the hunter (I imagine scenes where the victim knows the player is in the house and is trying to escape.) and also the hunted intensifies the tension and scary-factor profoundly, along with a well-written and immersive story and environment. I plan on doing a lot of the level design/gameplay design/programming/and almost all of the story writing, and hopefully will be able to find some help from any artists or programmers interested... let me know what you all think!

This sounds a to be a really nice idea.

Thanks hugo! I really think it could be a cool game, and something AAA companies would probably never consider making because of the subject material.

Sounds a little bit like the indigo prophecy, except with more murder lol. Still a great concept though. Just wondering what engine do you plan on using, if any at all?

Lol! I can definitely see that with what I've written here, though I've expanded the idea and gameplay a lot. Thanks! I will be using UE4 to develop this game, I can't get enough of the blueprints visual scripting tool.

Oh, haven't touched UE4 myself but the blueprint thing does sound interesting, maybe something ill look into at some point. Well good luck to you sir.

I highly recommend it, it's turning out to be quite the engine, and it's just as customizable as Unity with the full source code, which is awesome. Thank you, sir, you as well with all of your future endeavors :]

It definitely sounds interesting, at first I almost thought that you had killed people but you were also a person trying to solve the crimes., kinda like an evil version of fight club meets heavy rain. So can you completely crazy?

Im rooting for you, we're all in this together.

Completely crazy? No, not exactly... technically, losing all of your sanity causes you to "die" in the game and you'll need to restart. What I'm trying to do is to strike a good balance between the insanity and psychosis stemming from the player's regrets and his struggle to hold on to how he truly sees himself as a person... something he could never do until he died and was freed from the torment of his mind.
