Hey everyone, I'm new to the gaming industry, looking for work as a concept artist (really anything in the art department). I'm really gunning for an in-house job somewhere but i have little experience. I worked at a gaming company for about 8 months, they made slot games and such but I was let go when they were bought and merged with another company.

In any case I'm really trying to nail down what I need to do in order to lock up an in house job and any advice would be really appreciated. My portfolio is here Luminousboy.carbonmade.com. And my Resume is here Docs.google.com

Thanks for your time guys

Well to start, your not using the correct terminology.

Gaming company= gambling development company

Games company= game development company.

You have experience in a "Gaming" company, which despite it's surface similarities, is actually quite a different industry.

Do you want to be part of an industry that develops casinos? , or do you want to be a part of an industry that is meant to be a new extension of the entertainment industry?

Sure, some people and companies intentionally or unintentionally blur the lines, and IMO, contribute to the degradation of games, by making them "addictive"

Do you want to make things addictive or do you want to make things fun?

Clearly, we know where your aiming, but these small details matter a lot, especially when your trying to break in. Even some professionals, mostly in other industries, don't realize the difference, let alone some around here.

Furthermore, what we can give you here is advice, projects, and indie experiences, we can't give you here is direct consideration for "in house" jobs with Industry studios.

If your looking for "in house" consideration, you'd do better applying directly to a company's "career" section. But then again, you likely won't be considered until you get more experience, which is what this place has the potential to offer you.

Anyways,

so how are you at organic creatures?

Do you know how to animate in 3DS max?

Hey. Yes I definitely understand the difference between gaming and games, there was some overlap with the mobile/web department who were much closer to a zynga, or gameloft. The overlaps I'd say came from the iterative process and interaction with the designers. As an artist, what I did was create visual assets for the games (icons, layout, animations, etc) but from my experience working on indie projects the same basic rules applied, the difference came in the use of the work. Many of the people who were there had either worked at or left to work at games companies like Epic.

The goal was never to make the game addictive, the art wasn't responsible for that the gameplay was. There two simple rules. Eye-catching for casual games - Simple for hardcore. That's about it.

As for skills they mostly lie in 2D. Organic creatures I think I'm pretty decent with. I know how to animate in Max, but the quality of the animation isn't very high. I have a few clips from playing around in Max, but it's more peripheral knowledge and not my main focus.
