Hey guys, still in the learning process. If for example you create a character from a standstill and make him/her to jump. Do you need create 3 different movements? (Character standing, character in mid-air and character landing)
Would love to pick someone's brain for a few minutes to understand more.

Are you asking to compare animation techniques of sprites versus models?

Model animation: Youtube.com

Thanks ccbytes!! The links and terminology was very helpful.

Any chance you know roughly how much would it cost for a designer to do a spritesheet for one character (2d and/or 3d)?

Hey there.

I don't have first hand experience purchasing sprite sheets.
However I do have first hand experience contracting designers in other industries.

The cost will vary greatly depending on the designers rate, and how many different movements you have planned for the character.

Looking at the spritesheet it looks like my character/s would need a number of movements designed. Multiply that with 15 or so characters. Hmm.. I'm starting to feel dishearten about this - it's looking towards more to the ten's of thousands. May need to do some revision.

Instead of 'by hand" sprite sheets, have you considered getting a 3D model + bones + rigging done up?
With the right texturing and filters you can make 3D models look like 2D sprites.

Once the model is done you can render an almost limitless number of poses as required.

I have been learning how to do character animations this week.

For the 3D approach, you can see my attempt here Indiedb.com

There also exists one more option. If you can find a sufficient artist with Photoshop you can have them create 2D character assets and pieces, (Like hands, mouths, etc.) and then take those pieces and use them in Spine. I'm going that route more than likely with some of my games until I find a dedicated character artist for my team.

I'll look into that - sound like an option.
